What Sothic knows about its readers, why, and for how long.
Sothic collects as little as it can. Reading the site sets no cookies, shows no advertising and involves no tracking across other websites. Personal information reaches Sothic in only two ways: when you write to the editor, and when you sign up for calendar alerts.
Who is responsible
Sothic is published by Sothic Press, LLC, a Delaware limited liability company, which decides how the information described here is used. Questions and requests go to editor@sothic.org.
Reading the site
Sothic counts visits with Vercel Web Analytics. It uses no cookies. Each visit is recorded with the page viewed, the site that linked to it, the country and region, and the type of browser, operating system and device. A visitor is recognized within a single day by an anonymous code derived from the request, which is discarded after 24 hours. Sothic sees only totals and cannot identify any reader from them.
Like any web host, Vercel receives each visitor’s IP address in order to deliver the page, and may keep it for a short period in its own logs for security and operations. Sothic does not use those logs to identify readers.
Writing to the editor
If you write to editor@sothic.org, Sothic receives your email address, your name if you give it, and your message. They are used to reply to you and, if you report an error, to check it and issue a correction. A published correction names a reader only with that reader’s permission.
Correspondence is kept for up to three years. A message that led to a published correction is kept for as long as the correction stands, as part of the record behind it.
Calendar alerts
If you sign up for calendar alerts, Sothic keeps your email address and the date you signed up. The address is used only to send alerts and, if a paid service is introduced, to ask once whether you want to continue. You will not be charged, and you will not be moved to a paid service, without first agreeing to it.
To stop, reply stop to any alert or write to the editor. Your address is removed from the list at once and deleted within 30 days.
What is never done
Sothic does not sell, rent or share readers’ information, does not use it for advertising, and does not build profiles of readers or make automated decisions about them.
Services that handle information for Sothic
- Vercel (United States) hosts the site and provides the visitor counts.
- Cloudflare (United States) runs the sothic.org domain and receives mail sent to it.
- Migadu (Switzerland) holds the editor’s mailbox and sends replies and alerts.
Each handles information only to provide its service to Sothic. Sothic is based in the United States, so information you send is handled there and in Switzerland. Where the law requires it for transfers from the European Union or the United Kingdom, these services rely on the standard contractual clauses approved for that purpose.
Your choices and rights
You can ask Sothic what information it holds about you, ask for it to be corrected or deleted, withdraw your consent to alerts at any time, or object to its use. Write to editor@sothic.org; requests are answered within 30 days.
For readers in the European Union or the United Kingdom: alerts are sent on the basis of your consent; replies to correspondence, corrections and the running of the site rest on Sothic’s legitimate interest in publishing an accurate record and answering its readers. You also have the right to complain to the data protection authority where you live.
Changes to this notice
This notice carries a version number and a date. If it changes, the version number is incremented and the change is described here. Nothing is amended silently.
